I am sure everybody is tired of seeing swimming jokes by now, but I've yet to do one. So 
to you.
Ah memories! When I went on my very first mission in Assassin's Creed I accidentally bumped into one of the guards right at the entrance. Putting on my "OH SHIT!" face, I looked for an escape and spotted water! "Haha! I can jump in there and escape those dumb guards!" And I did so….Only to watch in horror as Altair flailed around like a dumbass and drown himself. -__- I was torn between despair and laughing my ass off at the pitifullest that is not knowing how to swim.
Being able to swim very well myself, I can't very well imagine people not being able to swim. :/ Just stupid on my part I guess.
When I first came across water in AC2 I was scared to death of it. I accidentally fell in it almost immediately though and found I could swim! Every once in a while I still forget I can swim and fear the water. D:

That is why whenever I use Altair's outfit in any Assassin's Creed game from AC2 to AC Unity, I always climb slowly, use the Sword of Altair and use boats or hop across things when on water to give the experience that Altair can't swim even in the later games, although he can now.
